Hi everyone!! It is a brand new year & hopefully that is a sign of something positive for ALL of us!
The holidays are long gone & the new year was exciting – but now it’s just January. It’s been a tough month in Toronto, the weather has been NASTY. I’ve been trying to keep warm & cozy while planning all of the things I want to accomplish in 2018. Spoiler alert: I’m finding it really hard to be motivated 🙁
I’ve gone into the new year with some anxiety about the future. Luckily, I’ve been able to start painting (which is something I always wanted to do – but never got the chance while I was at Sears). After following all of these super cool painters on instagram… I thought it was time for me to invest in some supplies.
First, I bought a set from the dollar store – I mean, what if I was extremely terrible… I didn’t want to spend the money right off the bat lol. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. The dollar store supplies were AWFUL. The colours were bad, the brushes were bad, the paper was bad – it was all around no bueno. BUT… I made it work. However, I knew if I really wanted to take this seriously, I would have to buy some solid supplies. Thankfully, I was gifted a gift card to Michael’s from Stefon’s family for Christmas.
So this week, I ventured into Michael’s and (even though I’m new at this) I was in heaven. There were so many options to choose from. I did some research before buying, but seeing everything in person was so exciting. I opted for a standard set with 48 (amazing!) colours, some decent brushes and two small canvases. The canvases are for when I’m feeling more confident – I have a book right now for all of my “practice” pieces.
I’m happy to say that I’ve really been enjoying my new found hobby. It’s been great to start something brand new to me. This transition between careers is difficult at times, but it’s small projects like this that reminds me that I am very lucky to be exploring new things that I wouldn’t necessarily do if I was wrapped up in work life again. I’m trying to take it day by day – and painting has definitely brought something positive to my life!
Here’s a few shots of my new goodies 🙂 Please… if you are an artist – or paint – or anything… I would love to hear some tips on what works/what doesn’t/anything really!
